PS4 Crossplay Coming!

When Fortnite first came to the Nintendo Switch not too long ago, one of the big features that was being touted was crossplay. That’s right, if you had a Switch, you could play against your friends who own an Xbox One. But for some reason, PS4 crossplay was unavailable.

It was later revealed that the reason was simple: money. Sony didn’t feel there was any money in promoting crossplay. After all, why would they allow crossplay between their competition? Because it’s the internet, there was outrage over this, but I never personally thought it would result in anything unless Sony saw their bottom line suffering, but I guess that may have indeed happened because crossplay is now coming to PS4.

Today it was announced by John Kodera, president and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, that the Fortnite crossplay beta has launched on their system today. Here’s what he said:

“Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution.

“The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.”

Fortnite won’t be the only one receiving crossplay. As mentioned, they’ll also have cross-platform features for select third-party content.

This is a big step for Sony, and as he says later in the statement, it represents a huge change in policy for them, so as obvious as a choice as it may seem from the outside, I think they do deserve kudos for acting on this as quickly as they have.
