Game Of Thrones: Illegal Downloaders Top Target For Hackers

Hola, TV watchers! Are you a fan of Game of Thrones? One last question (and it’s an important one): do you watch the show on HBO or illegally download them using pirating services? If you answered yes to that question, you may want to knock it off. No, I won’t go into some long speech about how you’re killing the industry (though you’re certainly not helping), but it turns out you are a big target for cybercriminals.

I know. Chances are you’re 30 years old, and as such, have known for years that hackers like to attach malware and viruses to their pirated content. But if you’re like many people, you may have gotten laxer in recent years because of the absence of any concrete consequences. Well, I’m here to scare you straight once more.

According to Variety, Game of Thrones is the top TV show hackers are using to embed their malicious code. In fact, there have been over 170,000 infection attempts from these illegal downloads, with about 50,000 users being affected.

If you’re someone who pirates media but avoids Game of Thrones, don’t think you’re off the hook. Apparently, AMC’s The Walking Dead episodes had 100,000 infection attempts on around 20,000 users. So it ain’t good. Those numbers for Stranger Things are 13,257 and 4,600, respectively, and 5,300 and 2,063, respectively, for Westworld.

Sure, when all said and done, the numbers aren’t huge when you take into account the size of the internet, but it’s something to be cognizant of. Maybe you’ll think twice before clicking that download button in the future.
