Quentin Tarantino Could End His Career Directing A Star Trek Film

Oh, Tarantino, you pretentious fellow. Don’t get me wrong. I love his work and I want to see him keep doing what you — which is the only way we’d have him — but I can’t help but think he’s stunting his own potential by limiting himself to ten films. He’s been saying that for years. Ten movies and then he’s out of the game, off to write plays and novels instead of films.

With Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he is releasing is ninth, and presumably second to last, film, meaning that whatever he makes next is likely his final one. With him potentially working on a Star Trek movie, is it possible, though, that he could simply not count that movie since it’s not original?

“I guess I do have a loophole, [if] the idea was to throw a loophole into it,” Tarantino told CinemaBlend. “Which would be [to go], ‘Uhhh, I guess Star Trek doesn’t count. I can do Star Trek … but naturally I would end on an original.’ But the idea of doing 10 isn’t to come up with a loophole. I actually think, if I was going to do Star Trek, I should commit to it. It’s my last movie. There should be nothing left-handed about it. I don’t know if I’m going to do that, but that might happen.”

Tarantino goes on to posit the idea that doing a Trek film could give himself and audiences a glimpse of what could have been had his career gone differently. In other words, how could have Tarantino’s career gone if he looked for standard studio jobs instead of writing his own ideas?

It’s an interesting thought, but I still say that the idea of 10 is silly and arbitrary, though in his defense on this front, if he were in the business of loopholes, Jackie Brown also shouldn’t count since that was an adaptation of Rum Punch. In short…just keep making movies, brah. We’ll keep watching them!
