Quibi Launch Underwhelms With 300,000 Downloads In First Day

Okay, so I think it’s worth putting everything into perspective right upfront. Quibi, while a cool idea, was never a service that was going to explode from day one. This isn’t Disney+ here. This is a new service that is starting from scratch with no legacy content and with an all-new format. Unlike other services that largely cater to standard TV and film formats, Quibi does its best to cater to an evolving audience with shorter content that updates more frequently.

So instead of getting one hourlong episode of something a week, you’re getting five to ten minutes every weekday across various shows. Their content ranges from serialized dramas to hilarious garbage game show stuff (and I mean that in the best way) like Dishmantled. So, with all that out of the way, how did this fare?

Not great, Bob.

According to TheWrap, Quibi was only downloaded 300,000 times in its first 24 hours. The data comes courtesy of Sensor Tower this morning. And this figure is in spite of the fact that they offered all users 90 free days. That’s right. Three months of free content and they’re still coming up fairly short.

Again, it’s unfair to compare this to the blockbuster launch of Disney+ last year, but I’m going to do it anyway. Its 300,000 downloads are only 7.5% of Disney+’s 4 million downloads in its first 24 hours. Conversely, it had six times the number of downloads as HBO Now’s in its launch five years back. That being said, HBO’s situation is very different because of the fact that its content is available outside of that streaming-only service.

While this isn’t a great launch, I’d say it’s too early to make any assumptions about the long-term prospects of Quibi. It’s a unique service with a weird name, and it’s a concept that I would imagine would take years to take hold. That being said, it is a service that boasts $1.75 billion in funding. That funding is very evident in its content, which boasts plenty of big names and celebrities, but let’s hope that doesn’t result in investors running scared.
