Chrono Trigger Composer Yasunori Mitsuda Joins Retro-Inspired Sea Of Stars Video Game

As I reported last week, there’s an exciting new turn-based RPG in the works from indie dev Sabotage Studio. This game, Sea of Stars, takes influence from the JRPG classic Chrono Trigger. You can see the influence at every turn. As a fan of the Squaresoft classic, I knew immediately I needed to back this game.

And it’s not just looking to replicate what Chrono Trigger brought to the genre over 20 years ago. As shown by its Kickstarter video, it brings plenty new elements to the table too. From its engaging battle system to its dynamic lighting system, there is plenty there to latch onto. If that wasn’t enough, here’s another juicy bit of news to wet your whistle.

Sabotage Studio has officially announced that Yasunori Mitsuda, one of the composers of Chrono Trigger, has joined the project as a guest composer. That’s right, one of the composers responsible for crafting the score for the game that serves as inspiration for Sea of Stars, is joining Sea of Stars.

“By contributing his legendary musical genius to the project, he will help convey the depth of this fantasy world’s story while ensuring its nostalgic roots are paid proper homage,” Sabotage wrote in a statement. “Being such an inspiration for all of us, Mitsuda represents exactly what Sea of Stars needed to feel truly whole.”

“Without knowing exactly why, ‘I want to write music for this game’ was the feeling I had while seeing it convey the nostalgic golden age of the ‘90s,” Mitsuda wrote in a statement. “Although there are still many games being released with this classical style, I dont’ think players are satisfied with just nostalgia. As seen in their previous game, by adding new systems and ideas to classic formulas, Sabotage Studio breathes fresh, new air into their work.”

Mitsuda continued: “Impressed by the respect they show for past game while at the same time giving players new ways to have fun, I found myself wanting to make a game with everyone at Sabotage Studio. Please look forward to an exciting adventure.”

At this time, it isn’t clear just how extensive Mitsuda’s involvement will be with Sea of Stars. However, even if it’s just one song, this brings an extra air of credibility to an already-awesome-looking project. In many ways, it brings the homage full circle.
