Is anyone else tired of the retelling of European stories? It can’t just be me. Also, I’m tired of Disney remakes and I’m just gonna say it, why do people keep casting those who are not white in white history/historical fiction roles? It’s not going to work for every project released. Many of us want diversity in movies and in Television, just get out of European history. It’s overplayed. Don’t get me wrong. I love Europe, but there is rich history in other places as well. West Side Story actor, Rachel Zegler, was just cast as Snow White and I’m just not happy with the news. A part of the reason is my disappointment with Disney reboots and another part is race-swapping. It isn’t going to solve this obsession with Europe.

The New Snow White

Rachel Zegler sent out a tweet after the news hit to share her excitement. I have no issue with Zegler. In fact, I’m looking forward to seeing her in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Also, I am wanting to try West Side Story even though I’m not heavily into musicals. The Disney movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, is based on the story, Snow White, from Grimm’s Fairy Tales. That’s great, but I’m still tired of the Disney remakes as well as the huge focus on Europe. Although, one show that caught my attention was Bridgerton. It was obvious that it would be a story with a loose adaptation and a fantasy of the Regency Period. I think it worked and I loved it, but I fear too many will or have jumped on the same bandwagon and will turn race-swapping into another way to tire out European story-telling.

Disney is also remaking The Little Mermaid and I’m not excited to see that one either. I think if it wasn’t Disney, I would feel better about it. Although, they’re both still European stories we’ve all heard before. I would love to see more historical projects from around the world instead of this fixation on one continent and its high class. I’m glad Rachel Zegler is excited about the role and I hope Snow White goes well for those who are also excited, but it’s just not a movie I’m psyched to see.
