Well Groomed: Director Rebecca Stern on Documenting Creative Dog Groomers

We’ve heard of baby and child pageants. Dog pageants are a different animal altogether.

Tonight on HBO, it will premiere Well Groomed, a documentary about creative dog groomers. It is a very specialized field, in which dog groomers use their scissors and sheers to create colorful art on dogs. This creative society also competes with its dog pageants across America.

Documentarian Rebecca Stern followed four champion groomers and their dogs through a year in the life on the technicolor competition circuit. From South Carolina to California, New York to Arkansas, the film follows dog groomers from their homes to large-scale dog grooming competitions where these women are revolutionizing the age-old question—what is art?

LRM Online had a phone conversation with director Rebecca Stern about her approach and experience with creative dob groomers.

Well Groomed premieres on HBO tonight.

Listen to the audio interview below. A full print interview of the audio track will be updated at a later date.
