Review: Netflix’s Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, Part II

With a highly successful first season and an enjoyable “winter solstice” special under its belt, Netflix’s Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina resurrected with its highly-anticipated “part two” season. When we last left young Ms. Spellman, she had left Baxter High to join the ranks of the Academy of the Unseen Arts, fully embracing her witching ways. Additionally, Aunt Zelda was in the early stages of a relationship with Father Faustus Blackwood and the being embodying the body of Mary Wardwell was continuing with her treacherous plans.

This time around, the series takes a deeper dive into the darkness as Sabrina becomes more involved in the dark arts. Moreover, Sabrina instills a bit of “witch feminism” into the school, challenging Blackwood’s archaic rules of leadership within the Order. The stakes are much higher as a new romance builds for Sabrina, her mortal friends face new challenges in their personal lives, Blackwood’s future plans for the Order become apparent, and the truth about Sabrina’s parents are revealed—all while “Wardwell” reveals her true identity, her deep connection to the Dark Lord, and how Sabrina fits in to the big picture.

Part II of Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina has a much more risque theme in its delivery, plunging deeper into the habits and methods of the Church of Night. The Dark Lord Lucifer also plays a more prominent part of the story, eventually shedding his animal form and appearing in his angelic state. While the darkness is amped up, the dark humor and sarcasm are still prevalent throughout the series, especially from aunts Hilda and Zelda (Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto, respectively). Adding to the humor, the series continues with the altered phrases of what society is used to, aligning more with the beliefs of the worshipers of the Church of Night (“Satan bless us” and “there will be heaven to pay”… nice).

Kiernan Shipka has grown comfortable in her role as Sabrina and immerses herself in fully developing Sabrina’s character. If Part I was Sabrina finding her place in the world, Part II is Sabrina gaining full control of her own destiny. In the case of Sabrina’s trio of friends Harvey, Rosalind, and Susie, actors Ross Lynch, Jaz Sinclair, and Lachlan Watson do a phenomenal job of drawing empathy to their supporting characters. Watson especially excels in presenting the inner struggle her character is going through: revealing to her father her change in gender and asking to be called Theo going forward. From Richard Coyle’s Blackwood and Michelle Gomez’ Wardwell to Chance Perdomo’s Ambrose and Tati Gabrielle’s Prudence, the entire supporting cast is ripe with talent as they continue to deliver exquisite performances throughout the series.

As far as this writer is concerned, if you were worried that season two would not live up to season one, cast those worries aside. Part II of Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina only improves upon the story set by creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, gradually building to a monumental showdown between Sabrina and her unavoidable fate. If you have not caught up on Part II or have yet to watch the series at all, get to it… right now.
