Review – Netflix’s Marc Maron: End Times Fun

Most of us now have a bit more free time at home. We’re working at home and being told to self-quarantine. We’re establishing social distancing as a daily requirement. Everything is altered as society attempts to flatten the curve of COVID-19. In these times, we as a society look for things to help take our minds off of the real world. We either think of positive aspects or joke about the issue we’re dealing with. It’s considered dark humor, but it can deliver relief during an uncertain time.

Enter Marc Maron and his unique brand of cynical humor with his latest Netflix special, Marc Maron: End Times Fun.

If you’ve ever listened to Maron’s podcast or watched his series on IFC, you know what to expect. Maron doesn’t hold back as he commands the stage with his critiques on religion, health, the MCU, and are lack of environmental awareness. “We did everything we could,” Maron says sarcastically in regards to climate change. “We brought our own bags.”

Sometimes, a little dark humor is what we need. Humor that pokes fun at our current situations or current events. It allows us a moment of control over seething we have no control over. A moment to belittle something that we fully recognize as being out of our grasp. Dark humor can also give us the chance to laugh at ourselves, as Maron offers up when he does a little bashing of MCU. He plays the angle that Jews are amazing storytellers by using the bible and comic books as perfect examples. Additionally, he shines a light on how both categories have extreme followers. I consider myself a Marvel fanboy, but even I can’t help but laugh at the way Maron characterizes us because, in some cases, he’s accurate. And we should be able to laugh at ourselves.

Take a break from the 24-hour news channels and constant state-wide alerts, sit back, and laugh at the cynical, agitated, and enjoyable darkness of Marc Maron. It’ll induce some chuckling you’re probably in need of.

Marc Maron: End Time Fun is available now on Netflix.
