A new report from THR says Rey is a character in demand for future Star Wars movies, including Simon Kinberg’s trilogy. This report follows on from some rumors that said similar and it’s less news and more opinion based. The report from Borys Kit talks about how Star Wars has a lack of in demand characters and therefore Rey, who represents the future of the Jedi Order is in demand.
We know that Rey was set to star in the upcoming Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directed movie. That movie was delayed and now there is this Simon Kinberg trilogy which THR confirms Rey is set to be a part of. The reports discusses how this could cause conflict with plans not necessarily designed to run alongside one another.
Jeff Sneider and John Rocha had a recent discussion that said similar which we covered. Check the related section below. Check out the full article for yourself, but here are some choice quotes from Borys.
“She is the most valuable cinematic asset, in some ways maybe the only one, Star Wars has right now,” one source said.
“Rey, the scavenger-turned-Jedi played by Daisy Ridley in the last three episode movies, is key to the franchise’s next turn. That potentially puts Kinberg’s trilogy story development, as early in its conceptual stages as it may be, on a collision course with the Rey standalone movie that is actively in the works with director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.”
This echoes what Sneider had to say. Namely that they are separate projects. Also there is the possibility that the new trilogy could replace the currently planned Obaid-Chinoy movie, which is currently looking for a new writer.

Ultimately this leaves us knowing what we always knew. That we have genuinely no idea what happens next with Star Wars movies. The debate among trades and other good sources about whether this trilogy will be Episode 10-12 also rages on with no clear winner. Rey may be the character that is needed most for what comes next. However, through no fault of Daisy Ridley that character isn’t as well loved as she could have been. Meaning whatever does come next for Rey has to be good for her character popularity. Ultimately, it has to be a good Star Wars movie.
One does wonder whether having a Rey movie which sets up the next trilogy would be a decent approach. However, it would depend on how these storylines connect or not to each other in current form.
Rey is definitely coming back to Star Wars. Where and when though is a different story.
