Rhythm Of War Final Word Count Revealed: Longer Than Oathbringer?

The Rhythm of War final word count is in!

If you’ve been following the Rhythm of War coverage on the site, you’ll know I’ve been doing my best to figure out just how long this book is. Up until now, each entry in The Stormlight Archive has been longer than the one before it. However, based on recent posts from the audiobook narrators, it seemed as though Rhythm of War could break that streak. After all, Oathbringer was already a mammoth tome, clocking in at 462,000 words. For reference, the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy is roughly 576,000 words.

So, yeah, it’s quite a feat for any book to approach anywhere near the lengths of Oathbringer. And, as previously indicated, all signs pointed to Rhythm of War to being close, but just slightly shorter. Luckily, that isn’t the case. We got the word from an official word count of the fourth Stormlight Archive book.

Peter Ahlstrom, author Brandon Sanderson’s editorial assistant recently took to Twitter to give the final word count.

“Final word count including acknowledgments, text on art, and ars arcanum is: 470k for Rhythm of War, 462k for Oathbringer.”

So, there you have it. Contrary to what I had reported previously, Rhythm of War is, in fact, longer than Oathbringer. With each entry, Sanderson just keeps on proving he has the ability to outdo himself in terms of sheer volume. Whether or not this book will be able to measure up in terms of quality…now that remains to be seen.

Regardless, I hope you’ve stretched your page-turning finger, because this beast is gonna be huge. Even if Tor Books ends up reducing the text size in order to reduce the page count (as is seemingly indicated by the audiobook narrators), It’s still guaranteed to be one doorstopper of a novel.
