The Rhythm of War cover has been finished by artist Michael Whelan. Now, we wait.

The production of Rhythm of War is moving along nicely. Earlier this week, we reported on the news that author Brandon Sanderson has finished copyediting for the new novel. And, in spite of how close we are to publication (roughly three months), we still have yet to see the U.S. cover for the Stormlight Archive book. We’ve had updates along the way from Sanderson during his livestreams, but it’s always hard to gauge how far along an artist is in a process.

Luckily, during last night’s livestream, Sanderson gave us a much-needed update on the cover. 

“I saw the cover art for the first time today for the U.S. cover,” Sanderson said during the signing. “It has been finished and sent in by Michael [Whelan]. It is gorgeous. We will let [the publisher] Tor decide when to reveal that. So that’s going to be up to them. I would expect it to not take too much longer. They probably want to put the title lettering and things on it first. So you should be seeing that cover before too much longer.”

While the U.K. cover has been revealed for what must be a couple of months now, I’m waiting on pins in needles to see what the U.S. edition will look like. Nothing against the U.K. cover, but there is a consistent style between all of Sanderson’s covers. In fact, they are so similar that it almost takes away from the excitement of seeing a new one. While the U.S. covers of The Stormlight Archive are similar and style, it does feel like we get a completely unique image each time. As such, it’s hard not to get a little bit excited.

Sadly, we have no idea how long it will be until we see a new image. Typesetting likely doesn’t take too long — after all, they have a pretty consistent style and standard across this series. However, it all depends on what Tor wants to do with their marketing. We still have three months to go, so they may want to hang on to the cover design so that there’s more to share when the time comes.
