Rian Johnson Defends His Last Jedi Luke Skywalker Against A Fan’s Detailed Analysis

For me and many other Star Wars fans, the version Luke Skywalker in Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi, wasn’t the hero we wanted or deserved, it was just the one we got. One fan whose Twitter account bears the name NotRian’sLuke has taken his dislike of the treatment of Luke in the film and done a case study.

NotRian’sLuke posted his work to his Twitter account and as the most made the rounds, it made its way to Rian Johnson himself, who responded, defending his version of Luke. You can check out both posts below.

“Gil, I understand that point of view but I completely disagree with it. In fact I think it disrespects the character of Luke by treating him not as a true mythic hero overcoming recurring wounds & flaws, but as a video game character who has achieved a binary, permanent power-up.”

I mean, Johnson certainly was brave –

but I think this level of drastic change came at the wrong time, perhaps in later films, a Jedi having this mindset would have gone over in a much smoother way.

I was actually happy when I heard Johnson had landed the gig as director of the trilogy’s second installment. I didn’t know much about him, except that I really enjoyed his film that starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Brick. However, when the film came out, I felt similar to how Han Solo must have felt when Lando betrayed him in Cloud City.

While in general, I do agree with Johnson that catering to fans is a bad idea, I think franchises as huge as Star Wars, especially when on the road back as the sequel trilogy was, there is more of an obligation to listen to the fandom. This was Luke’s and the other members of the original trio’s swan song, this is the last content we would get for them and totally denying us any fan service, was a mistake.
