The announced Rian Johnson Star Wars trilogy slips further away as the director signs a two picture deal with WB. Johnson is already contracted to film a third Knives Out movie for Netflix, a film he’s not yet written. Now the director has effectively ruled out starting a Star Wars trilogy after that deal by signing a new two picture deal with WB.
as per ComicBook,
‘On Monday, it was announced that Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street production company has signed a two-film producing deal with Warner Bros. Pictures. It is unknown at this point if Johnson will direct either film under this Warner Bros. deal, or if they will be a part of any of the studio’s existing franchises like DC or the Monsterverse.’
“Mike and Pam’s renewed commitment to original storytelling and the theatrical experience make Warner Bros. Discovery an ideal place to help us bring the filmmakers we love to audiences around the world on a grand scale,” Johnson and Bergman said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to have them as partners.”
As it says above, we currently don’t know if Johnson is directing these movies. However, even if he is only producing, it’s still a big time commitment.

My guess for the future is that Kathleen Kennedy will step aside/retire when her current contract ends. At that point there’ll be no announcement but Johnson will then say it’s up to whoever is the new head of Lucasfilm and that it will never actually happen. Or at least, not for many, many years to come. Johnson would need to commit around 6 years minimum to making a Star Wars trilogy written and directed by himself.
I’ve always said I’d be interested in seeing a trilogy from Johnson despite me not liking The Last Jedi much. However, I’d need to see improvements in his military savvy given my issues with TLJ. I also really like Johnson’s Knives Out movies and I’m interested to see what he does with WB. I just don’t think that Star Wars trilogy will ever happen, and I’m not sure that’s a bad thing.
What do you think of this news as Rian Johnson signs a two picture deal with WB? Do you agree with me this indicates Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy slips further away? Thoughts below.
