Rian Johnson Still Wants His Star Wars Trilogy To Happen

Rian Johnson still wants his Star Wars trilogy to happen. The director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi recently spoke with Empire ahead of his upcoming sequel Knives Out: Glass Onion. At one point following The Last Jedi Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said Rian Johnson would get a Star Wars trilogy to himself.

However, since then mixed reception for The Last Jedi and then even worse for The Rise of Skywalker halted some of Lucasfilm’s plans. As such, we’ve not had a movie actually go into production since. Both Johnson and Kennedy in previous interviews have said they still want this to happen. Yet as the years go by, you get the feeling it seems to become less and less likely.

I’ve no idea where the Star Wars universe is going when it comes to movies. However I do know that after Glass Onion Johnson has a third Knives Out movie to make for Netflix. Can he circle back to Star Wars after that? Johnson certainly hopes that;s the case, and he would be heartbroken if that was his one and only shot at Star Wars.

“I’ve stayed close to Kathleen [Kennedy] and we get together often and talk about it,” he tells Empire of his long-awaited Star Wars series. “It’s just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished, if I couldn’t get back in that sandbox at some point.”

Of course at Star Wars Celebration Kennedy said that for now Johnson is just too busy. To make that trilogy would be a minimum 5 year commitment, and right now that’s just not possible.

When it comes to the fanbase, The Last Jedi almost split it down the middle. There are those out there who laud The Last Jedi as the best Star Wars film since Empire Strikes Back, and there are those who really didn’t care for it. I really fall into the latter category. However I’ll concede this. The Last Jedi was the visually most interesting, and well shot Star Wars movie to date. It was, sadly however, for me, pretty boring.

I didn’t have the same issues with Luke Skywalker as some fans did. However I did have an issue with the way Johnson played fast and loose with the in-Universe established technology. Like the really slow chase, something we saw the Empire have zero issues with in Empire Strikes Back. Or the bombers which felt like the worst tech someone ever designed for a space based weapon. Oh and everything that happened on Canto Bight was utter, sh…shall we move on before I say the wrong thing?

That all being said, I’m not against Johnson getting his own trilogy. He’s still a good director, I would just hope he gets some technical expertise around the action scenes, (and some actual action scenes) next time around.

What do you think? Rian Johnson still wants his Star Wars trilogy to happen? Do you? Do you think it will ever happen? Leave any thoughts you have below as always.
