Rian Jonson Says Apple Won’t Allow Filmmakers To Show A Villain Using An iPhone

A company’s public image is very important. Business practices, charitable donations, and many other factors all contribute to how a company is perceived. Tech giant Apple has decided that associating with villains is not good for their public image, even allowing said villains to use their phones, even in fiction.

According to The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, the company won’t allow their phones to be shown being used by bad guys. Johnson revealed this while discussing his hit film, Knives Out, with Vanity Fair and you can check out what he had to say below.

“Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies but, and this is very pivotal if you’re ever watching a mystery movie, bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera. Every single filmmaker who has a bad guy in their movie that’s supposed to be a secret wants to murder me right now.”

Personally, I think these measures are a bit extreme, but they’re a private company an have the right to protect their brand’s image as they see fit. Though, I can understand this line of thinking to an extent. Sure, you wouldn’t want the likes of Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs to be using an iPhone, but how about Thanos? Thanos is cool, Thanos is awesome, and while he may be a villain, he isn’t evil and believes his objective is noble. I think the decision should be made on a villain-by-villain basis.
