Ricky Whittle Talks About Wanting To Play John Stewart Aka Green Lantern

Back in 2011 we got the highly disappointing Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. Since then we have only briefly seen the Lanterns in a flashback scene in Justice League. But as we know there is supposed to be a Green Lantern Corps feature film in development. One actor who has been campaigning hard for the role has been Tyrese Gibson, who is well known for his role in the Fast and Furious franchise. But there is another actor that the studios have been looking at, Ricky Whittle.

Whittle first gained a following thanks to his role as Lincoln on The CW’s television series The 100. His next role will be in the Starz’s television adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s epic novel American Gods as Shadow Moon in season 2 of the series. Now fans and American Gods co-showrunner and Logan screenwriter Michael Green have been supporting the idea of Whittle playing the part of John Stewart. In a conversation with SYFY WIRE he talked about his thoughts on possibly playing a Green Lantern, because he doesn’t just have an eye on John Stewart.

“The character Green Lantern needs to be reborn,” Whittle said. “Even Ryan Reynolds came up with that when he killed himself in the Deadpool credits, which was hilarious. I’d love to be a part of that universe, whether it be John Stewart or Simon Baz, maybe. They are both characters I would be honored to play.”

It looks like this isn’t just on Whittle’s wish list, he has actually had conversations about the film and feels honored that he would even be in the mix for the role. He even goes as far as letting everyone know that he would tour in a full Green Lantern costume if he landed the role.

“We know that Green Lantern Corps is coming out. I’ve had conversations, and to be in the conversation is a big honor. That’s all I can really ever ask for. Lots of fans have been campaigning for me. If they can get me Green Lantern, too, we are going to have to do something special. I’m going to have to start doing tours in full costume and go and watch with all the fans. But, yeah, I would love to be a part of that world. Hopefully, they do it justice this time,” commented Whittle.

Then he talked about why he thought why John Stewart was such an important character and why he is so relevant. Then he went on to talk about Geoff Johns, his involvement and to keep him in mind when casting the role.

“It’s a fantastic character, and an important character, if you read the comics in terms of human society and race and different issues that we are engulfed by in at the moment in America. You never know. If Geoff Johns is reading this, I am definitely up for it. I’m a huge fan.”

“What I like is they are taking their time with it. They are not rushing it like with the first one. They are taking their time and doing it right, which is how it should be. It’s in good hands with Geoff. Fingers crossed. Whatever he does, I’ll be watching it, no matter what.”

Geoff Johns was the writer on the DC comic book Green Lantern Corps in 2005 and with the work he has been doing on the series over at DC Universe, I would say this film is in good hands. Although like Whittle had mentioned it has been in development for some time now, but it has been rumored to be something like a buddy-cop film with an experienced Hal Jordan training the young Green Lantern recruit John Stewart.

The next DCEU film to hit theaters will be SHAZAM! on April 5th, 2019.
