Rob Liefeld On The ‘Finicky’ Nature Of DC Fans (Exclusive) | SDCC 2018

EXCLUSIVE: Fandom is a funny thing. If you’re a casual fan, you may ironically be more willing to let things go and to enjoy a film without a second thought, but the second you become more invested in something, the more you start to poke at its flaws. We’ve seen this with many a fandom. Right now, Star Wars fans are one of the big hot fandoms to point to, with films like Star Wars: The Last Jedi becoming a hotbed of controversy, but before that movie came out, DC fans were the ones getting all the attention.

These are the ones who have often been the most vocal about getting specific cuts of movies, and who have had a lot to deal with with the recent string of DC films. Recently, we all had a chance to see the Titans trailer, and overall, the reaction was…muted by many DC fans. Speaking with us at San Diego Comic-Con, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld discussed his thoughts on the trailer, and in doing so, brought up the “finicky” nature of DC fandom:

“We could do a whole episode on DC fandom, because I’ve been in this business for 32 years, and DC fans are traditionally more finicky. I’m gonna say finicky. Finicky. I’m thinking of that commercial that I had growing up … You’re way too young. But they pushed … It was Life cereal, and they said give it to Mikey. And then he ate it. And I’ve always thought, like, DC fans just kinda go, ‘That’s not for me.’ And they, you know … Which is very bizarre, because I gotta tell you, man … So you know, a DC fan, I’ll say, ‘I think Aquaman is gonna be awesome!’ ‘Oh, jury’s still out.’ And then I’ll go, ‘I think Shazam looks terrific.’ ‘Oh, looks no good to me.’ And I’m, okay, well I’m just gonna keep being positive. And then I’m like, oh, I love Titans, and a guy said, that was an abortion. And I’m like, you … They like sit and dream of these like. And I’m like, are they happy? Can they be happy? Can they achieve happiness? So I think wisely, you just gotta drown them out.”

Of course, Liefeld is making broad strokes about his experience with DC fans. There are plenty of great fans in any community, and the DC fandom is no different. Liefeld has always been a huge fan of the work getting made on screen, and in his comments here, he seems more interested in drowning out the negative so he can enjoy the content being thrown our way.
