Robbie Banfitch On Making His Found Footage Horror Film The Outwaters | Exclusive

The Outwaters

When it comes to horror films, my favorite type is found footage horror films. Earlier this month filmmaker Robbie Banfitch released his new film of this genre titled, The Outwaters. What’s the worse that can happen on a camping trip in a remote stretch of the Mojave desert?

With the release of The Outwaters, LRM Online‘s Manny Gomez spoke Robbie Banfitch. He is the writer and director of the film. While there wasn’t too much conversation about the plot itself, as it’s important that audiences go on this journey on their own (hopefully in the dark), there was a lot to talk about the process of making a found footage film.

This included the tough task of telling a story through a single-camera lens. As well as how he went about picking the correct sounds that give the scenes a lot more of a fear factor. Along with that, we talk about shot selection and about how much he shoots per section.

Overall Banfitch wanted The Outwaters to be able to raise hair, and evoke chills in the viewer. He aimed for a naturalistic, slow-burn experience. You can check out the full interview down below!

Here is the synopsis for The Outwaters:

Memory cards unearthed in a remote stretch of the Mojave Desert tell the story of four travelers who vanished during a sun-drenched camping trip. One night, everything changes when the foursome is sent on a mind-bending voyage of unrelenting terror into a world of darkness that no human was ever meant to see.

Banfitch previously worked for After Dark Films and Greenpeace. His directing credits include this film, Tinsman Road, and Exvallis.

The Outwaters is now playing in select theaters and available digitally through various channels.
