Robert Zemeckis Mystery Thriller Series Manifest Gets Pilot Order At NBC

While quality network TV seems to be a dying breed in the age of streaming media and cable, but there are definitely still some interesting, original projects out there that are getting produced on a near-weekly basis. Plus, as cable and streaming push the envelope, so too do networks need to start doing so, and with talent like Robert Zemeckis getting involved, it’s an exciting time to be a TV fan.

So what does Zemeckis have in store for us? According to Variety, the acclaimed filmmaker’s drama project, Manifest, has just had a pilot ordered by NBC.

The outlet describes the series as a mystery thriller, and it takes place after a plane disappears from radar and mysteriously reappears. To those on the plane, no time has passed, but to those not on the plane, years have gone by. The series will delve into these characters’ personal lives, and will dig into the bigger mystery surrounding what happened and “their destiny,” as the outlet puts it.

This new series definitely seems to be somewhat in the vein of shows like LOST and The Leftovers, and while there is definitely a possibility for this one to be one hell of a dragged out story, it also has the potential to be one of those weekly water cooler shows that network hasn’t really had in a good while.
