Rogue Squadron: The Krytos Trap & Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter Join The Star Wars Essential Legends Books

New Star Wars Essential Legends Books Announced Rogue Squadron The Krytos Trap Darth Maul Shadow Hunters And Death Troopers

Ever since Disney unceremoniously deleted the Star Wars Expanded Universe on April 25th, 2014, people have been wondering why they were leaving money on the table. It was even more confusing when Kathleen Kennedy complained that Star Wars didn’t have source material for the future, unlike Marvel. However, she didn’t seem to notice the large amount of EU stuff that was adapted into the Sequel Trilogy. Fast forward one lackluster trilogy, one bomb of a side film, and a disappointing series or two and you have the EU getting republished AND elements from Heir to the Empire being put in The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch. With that, Disney has been releasing the Star Wars Essential Legends Collection bit by bit and the newest books are pretty awesome. The New Essential Legends Books are: Rogue Squadron: The Krytos TrapDarth Maul: Shadow Hunter, and Death Troopers.

The Krytos Trap-

Personally, this is the greatest thing to hit Star Wars publishing since the EU’s death. The Rogue Squadron (formerly X-Wing Series Books 1-4 and sorta 8) are some of the best things to ever tell a tale from the Galaxy far, far away. I have gathered the unabridged audiobooks for the first two books in the series and I cannot wait for this one. The Author, Michael A. Stackpole, is a great writer and you can hear him talking about these books and more in THIS exclusive interview. I highly suggest you try the audiobooks for this series as they go all out on the production.

The Official synopsis for The Krytos Trap is:

The Rebels have taken the Imperial headquarters world of Coruscant, but their problems are far from over. A killer virus called Krytos is spreading among the population and fomenting a counterrevolution at the heart of the New Republic. At the same time, Rebel hero Tycho Celchu is on trial for treason, accused of murdering his comrade and fellow pilot Corran Horn.
Corran, however, is still alive, trapped in the secret, inescapable prison of Ysanne Isard, the imperial officer whose reputation for torture and cruelty have earned her the moniker Iceheart. As he fights for his freedom, the pilot discovers an extraordinary power in himself—the power of the Force!

Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter-

Now, I am not a Prequel Trilogy fan. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care for the ST either, but I know many of you will be excited to see Shadow Hunter joining the Essential Legends collection. I guess I can cope with your misplaced joy. The synopsis for this book reads:

After years of waiting in the shadows, Darth Sidious is taking the first step in his master plan to bring the Republic to its knees. Key to his scheme are the Neimoidians of the Trade Federation. Then one of his Neimoidian contacts disappears, and Sidious does not need his Force-honed instincts to suspect betrayal. He orders his apprentice, Darth Maul, to hunt the traitor down.

But he is too late. The secret has already passed into the hands of information broker Lorn Pavan, which places him right at the top of Darth Maul’s hit list. Then, in the labyrinthine alleyways and sewers of Coruscant, capital city of the Republic, Lorn crosses paths with Darsha Assant, a Jedi Padawan on a mission to earn her Knighthood.

Now the future of the Republic depends on Darsha and Lorn. But how can an untried Jedi and an ordinary man, stranger to the powerful ways of the Force, hope to triumph over one of the deadliest killers in the galaxy?

Death Troopers-

Now, I haven’t read this yet, but I am a fan of horror. The idea of a zombie hoard in Star Wars is right up my alley. I am hoping that we can get a cult-like horror set around the Witches of Dathomir. However, I doubt that’s likely. Thankfully, we have this cool idea of a story:

When the Imperial prison barge Purge—temporary home to five hundred of the galaxy’s most ruthless killers, Rebels, scoundrels, and thieves—breaks down in a distant part of space, its only hope appears to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party from the Purge is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back—bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours, nearly all aboard the Purge die in ways too hideous to imagine.

And death is only the beginning. The Purge’s half-dozen survivors will do whatever it takes to stay alive. But nothing can prepare them for what lies waiting aboard the Star Destroyer. For the dead are rising: soulless, unstoppable, and unspeakably hungry.

Both The Krytos Trap and Shadow Hunter will receive unabridged audiobook versions. All three hit August 2nd, 2022.
