Ruby Rose Cast As Batwoman For The CW’s Arrowverse Crossover And Potential Series

On the film front, Warner Bros. may be hard at work in bringing Batgirl to the big screen, but over on The CW, they’re working on a different type of bat…female. I’m talking about Batwoman, who debuted around 60 years ago.

The CW is looking to debut this character during this year’s crossover between Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. For the past couple year’s, it’s been a tradition to have a multi-episode crossover that takes the scope to a whole different level, and this year, the introduction of Batwoman seems to be the way they’re upping the ante this time around.

They’ve taken an important step to making the character a reality. According to Variety, The CW has cast Orange is the New Black and The Meg cast member Ruby Rose. In the comics, the character is Kathy Kane (and later, Kate Kane), an heiress who is inspired by the deeds of Batman to take on her own cowl.

Back in the 1980s, the character of Batwoman was written out during the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline as never having existed, but was brought back in 2006 as Kate Kane. She has since been portrayed as a lesbian character.

In addition to the crossover, The CW is developing a series around Batwoman, which I’m assuming Rose will also lead. The Vampire Diaries and Smallville‘s Caroline Dries will be serving as writer and executive producer. Also executive producing will be Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, and Sarah Schrechter.
