It seems like just yesterday social media was bashing the choice of Ruby Rose being cast as Kate Kane aka Batwoman. She first made her debut during the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event in December of 2018. Soon after she made her series debut. The CW’s Batwoman made television history. It is the first scripted live-action TV series to feature a lesbian superhero at the top of the call sheet.
Today in a surprise announcement via The Hollywood Reporter, we have learned that Rose has left the lead role on Batwoman after only one season. Producer Warner Bros. TV has also announced that the role will be recast ahead of the second season that was renewed for a second season back in January. A timeline for that new actress to take over the role is unknown at the moment.

Rose has made a statement regarding her departure. “I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” said Rose. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles. I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created. Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success — I am truly grateful.”
Warner Bros. TV, The CW, and Berlanti Productions also released a joint statement about the situation. “Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best. The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”

It seems like the relationship ended on good terms. I am curious as to the specific reason as to why Rose is leaving the role. It will also be interesting to see how they handle the next season. Especially noting that it only finished 20 of the 22 episodes that it had planned. How will they handle the transition? Will it be like if nothing ever happened or will they weave it into the story? We will hopefully have more answers as time progresses.
Now a new question arises. Who do you think should replace Ruby Rose in Batwoman? Let us know in the comment section below!
