A couple of years back, Warner Bros. seemed to be going completely nuts with “development fever.” They seemed to be developing projects for every secondary character known to man (okay, that’s an exaggeration, but you get the point). They even had projects that ranged from Birds of Prey to Gotham City Sirens, a Jared Leto-led Joker spinoff, and a Joker/Harley Quinn spinoff. All but one seemed to have fallen into nothingness…or have they?
FandomWire is reporting that there is a lot riding on Birds of Prey, the Harley Quinn-centric spinoff set to hit theaters early next year. The performance of that movie will seemingly determine whether or not they will explore another one of those movies: Joker and Harley Quinn.
The outlet states that such a film would be the next likely step after Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad, but that leaves one big question…will Jared Leto be reprising his role? The actor seems to have been upset by how Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker got prioritized in front of his. The outlet states that, as of right now, Leto’s involvement in a Joker/Harley Quinn movie is up in the air, but if he is out, then the studio would likely recast.
Personally, if Birds of Prey is a hit, I think Leto would be a fool to pass up the opportunity to make this film, as it would give him an opportunity to actually shine with better material (and I actually enjoyed his take). Then again, we don’t really know what Leto was promised and whether or not the studio actively misled him in order to take on the character in the first place, so maybe it wouldn’t be in his best interest to take it on.
What do you think of the possibility of a Joker/Harley Quinn film? This would likely not include a Batman, so it’s worth keeping that in mind as well. Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below!
