In case you have been living under a rock for the past few months, Sony is developing a universe built around Spider-Man characters, in the same world as established in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If that doesn’t make sense, I don’t know what to tell you, as we are all still scratching our heads trying to figure out exactly what Sony’s Amy Pascal, producer on Homecoming, meant when she said such things.
Sony officially has a Venom film starring Tom Hardy on the way, followed by Silver & Black which will focus on Spider-Man characters Silver Sable and Black Cat. Venom is set to release on October 5, 2018 with Silver & Black following on February 8, 2019. With that aggressive a release schedule, surely Sony is close to choosing a third film for their Spider-Verse?
Jeff Sneider of Meet the Movie Press reports that Sony is developing Nightwatch to follow Silver & Black. Nightwatch is the “code name” (as they say in Marvel comics these days) for Doctor Kevin Trench, who first appeared in Web of Spider-Man #97. His costume boosts his strength and durability and his cape responds to his subconscious thoughts to move on its own as well as allow him to glide in the air. Unfortunately, his original costume looks a little too much like Spawn’s, who made his first appearance less than a year before Nightwatch. Nightwatch appeared in many stories throughout the ’90s including his own mini-series and Maximum Carnage.
According to Snieder, Now You See Me screenwriter Ed Ricourt is drafting a script and Sony wants Spike Lee to direct the film. Take all this with a grain of salt, as aside from these comments on Meet The Movie Press, neither Sony or other major outlets like The Hollywood Reporter have announced anything about Nightwatch. And Nightwatch is a bit of an obscure choice, when you take into account over 50 years of Spider-Man characters.
Are you familiar with the character Nightwatch? Would you see a film based on this lesser-known character? Let us know in the comment section below!
