The Lord of the Rings series will feature the familiar faces of Elrond, Galadriel, and Sauron.

We have another rumor coming to you from the land of Middle-earth. This one comes courtesy of the folks over at TheOneRing.net. Admittedly, I haven’t heard much from them in the past, but when you post something this intriguing, it’s hard not to at least take notice. First things first, though, we should probably paint a picture of what to expect from the Amazon Prime Original series.

In spite of its name, The Lord of the Rings will not be a retelling of the novels that the films adapted in early 2000s. Instead, it will take place in the Second Age, which is long before the events in the novels. With that in mind, you shouldn’t expect to see any familiar Hobbits or wizards. But that doesn’t mean you won’t see any familiar faces.

This past December, it was revealed that the Elf Galadriel would be returning, but she won’t be alone. The aforementioned outlet took to Twitter to share that Elrond would be featured in the show along with the Dark Lord himself Sauron.

As mentioned before, Galadriel has already been mentioned before. Given that Elrond was around back when Sauron wielded the ring, it’s not a huge surprise he could be involved. It’s also not the biggest surprise that Sauron would make an appearance. Given that the show is called The Lord of the Rings, and that Sauron is involved in the Second Age, it makes a lot of sense.

The big question will be how Sauron will actually look. 

Sadly, actual details about the show elude us, but based on what resident Lord of the Rings scholar Cam Clark has told me, there’s a whole lot of potential in the age the show takes place in. Tolkien ever paints this age in broad strokes, so if we’re wishy-washy on this whole thing, that’s why.

While we can’t actually confirm this rumor, I’d be surprised if it wasn’t true, given the involvement of Númenor and the second age. To read up on what we could possibly expect, I highly recommend checking out Cam’s column HERE!
