With the recent release and success of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, it seems that Marvel has already had a great start to their 2016. They’ve already exceeded expectations with that film, and with DOCTOR STRANGE, they seemed poised to mark this year down as another success for the Marvel machine. As good as this year is looking to be, however, 2017 may be even better. Between THOR: RAGNAROK, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, and SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, there will be a total of three films set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe — a first for the studio.
Joblo’s got the scoop on the first two films of 2017, so let’s start with THOR: RAGNAROK.
It’s been rumored for some time that the film will have elements of PLANET HULK in it, and Joblo confirms these rumors, going on to say that Thor will end up on a strange planet and become involved in some gladitorial games run by Jeff Goldblum’s character, the Grandmaster. In addition to this plot reveal, the outlet also stated that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk will be sporting single-arm armor in the comics. No longer will poor little Hulk be relegated to a set of expanding pants.
This wasn’t the only thing Joblo had. If you’l recall, a couple months back, we broke the news that Tessa Thompson would be taking on the role of Asgardian warrior and hero Valkyrie. This is a huge departure from the comics, as the character is normally portrayed as a white-skinned, blond-haired Asgardian (surprise, no?). Joblo states that Marvel will be taking advantage of this departure, and rather than give a typical Asgardian hero appearance for Valkyrie, she will be wearing war paint, like a Native American warrior.
As far as the plot goes, it sounds like Thor will be searching for an ultimate weapon in an attempt to “stop Ragnarok and reset the universe.” There is no word on what the weapon is and what it does, but this certainly sounds par for the course for a Marvel movie, as more often than not, the object in contention is nothing more than a MacGuffin to set things in motion (I’m looking at you, Tesseract, and you Aether, and you Infinity Stone…), and I can’t imagine this one being much different.
Now let’s move on to their GUARDIANS-related scoops, which aren’t really scoops as much as they are confirmations.
Joblo confirmed that the villain of the film is reported to be Ayesha, who also goes by aliases Paragon, Her, and Kismet. In addition, they stated that Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki, who was confirmed to join the film a few months back (and who was rumored by many to be playing Mistress Death), would be the one playing the role. Here’s what the outlet had to say about the character.
“Now, the significance of Ayesha in GUARDIANS 2 and the greater MCU is rather huge, especially when you consider that she was created by The Enclave, a group of scientists dedicated to taking control of the world, starting with the creation of the perfect genetic beings, made to restart humanity. Their first version of this, called HIM, would later evolve into the character known as Adam Warlock, who escaped The Enclave. However, The Enclave made a second being, which became HER aka Ayesha, who also escapes and goes looking for HIM, who she considers to be her perfect mate to start a new perfect race.”
It’s unclear if any of that will make it into GUARDIANS, but some iteration of that character will be the main antagonist for the movie, which is notable since this will mark the first main female antagonist in the MCU — which is incredibly overdue.
Lastly, in a confirmation that surprises no one, Joblo states that the Guardians of the Galaxy are set to team up with the Avengers in the AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR movies.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017 and THOR: RAGNAROK hits theaters on November 3, 2017.
