Russo Bros Talk New Film Cherry And New Production Company AGBO | SDCC 2019

The Russo Brothers are a pretty big name right now after not only helming the biggest films of the last two years, but perhaps the biggest film of all time if Avengers: Endgame passes Avatar. It would be fair to say that everyone is eager to see what these director siblings are up to next.

We’ve known for a little while now that the Russo’s next film would be a low budget affair called Cherry starring none other than Tom Holland. Holland first pulled on the spandex suit of Spider-Man in the Russo’s Captain America: Civil War. Today the Russo’s are in attendance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and LRM were present at their panel, where they discussed Cherry and what it means to them.

Cherry begins filming this October, it’s based on a best selling book and set in Cleveland, Ohio and the directors say it is very dear to their hearts. The book is about addiction and locations from the book are places where the pair grew up around. They also confirmed the pretty obvious given the subject material, it will be R-rated.

The Russo’s know Cherry doesn’t have the surface level entertainment value of the Marvel movies they have been making recently, but they believe it was a story that needed to be told. The Russo’s want to use the capital they have built up making these mammoth movies to tell important stories that should be told, and Cherry was the perfect place to start for them.

The Russo’s also went on to talk about their new production company AGBO, created alongside regular writing partners Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The company functions like a studio and evolved from the foursome working together on the Marvel movies, where they’d get into a room together and break a story in a very disciplined fashion. The four of them all loved working together and so they created what they call a “storyteller studio” so they could collaborate with others in the same way. They also explained how they want to use AGBO to open the door to young filmmakers like Steven Soderbergh did for them.

All sounds pretty creative and should ensure some good movies going forward, though, I am sure most Marvel fans were hoping that they’d be back in the MCU sooner rather than later. Thing is, there’s absolutely no reason why the Russo’s or Markus and McFeely can’t be back making Marvel movies in the future. This just means they have a place now to go wild with passion projects, like Cherry seems to be, and thus they reap the fruits of their success.
