Legendary filmmaker John Carpenter made an announcement to his social media followers Friday morning. While the iconic writer/director/composer recently made headlines after signing with DC Comics to write a story arc on the Joker, this tweet is in reference to one of his earlier (and arguably greatest) creations. Carpenter posted a 25-second teaser regarding the future of the Halloween film franchise.

Posted on the iconic writer/director/composer’s Twitter account, the clip features scenes from the 2018 film with titles stating that “the saga of Laurie Strode and Michael Myers isn’t over,” followed by the release dates for TWO Halloween sequels. The second film, titled Halloween Kills, is scheduled to be released October 16th, 2020. One year later, the third film—Halloween Ends—will be scheduled for October 15th, 2021.

In 2017, writers David Gordon Green and Danny McBride developed an arc that was originally designed to be told over two-to-three films. When Blumhouse Productions picked up the script, it was decided to narrow it down to one film and judging the future of the story by the box office take. With the film banking over $250 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million, a sequel seemed almost certain. Now, with the news Carpenter has shared, Green and McBride look to finish their arc with a complete trilogy.
As a fan of the Halloween franchise—while admitting a number of sequels were below average—I felt that the 2018 film was a good conclusion to the Strode/Myers arc and that there was no need to continue it. However, full disclosure, with Green and McBride supposedly returning, Carpenter eagerly promoting it, and the films opening on back-to-back Halloweens, I am very intrigued (and yes, excited) to see what’s to come.
