Russo Brothers Confirm That Kenneth Branagh Delivered The Asgardian Distress Call In Avengers: Infinity War

Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

After following the downright hilarious and crazy Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War began directly after the mid credit stinger of that movie. The change of tone of the movie was firmly set in this opening sequence as somber music plays and we hear a voiceover transmission form the Asgardian ship calling for aid as Thanos and his forces have defeated Thor and most of his people.

I had heard many fans express a familiarity with the voice making that distress call, and yet I never really gave it much of a second thought. I had even heard people suggest Kenneth Branagh as a fit for that voice and again paid it no mind. Turns out I should have paid more attention to the wolf-eared fans, because the director of 2011’s Thor was indeed the voice behind that distress call, which is a nice little Easter egg.

Anthony and Joe Russo confirmed this secret piece of casting during the directors’ commentary for Avengers: Infinity War which is now out for digital download and will appear on Blu-ray within the next week or so. Here is what Joe Russo said.

“We had this idea very late in editorial to add the amazing Sir Kenneth Branagh to come in and do the opening distress call over the logo that sets the stage and carries us into the scene with Thor and Loki and Thanos on the ark”

As I said this is a nice little touch given that Branagh was the man responsible for first bringing Thor to the big screen in the MCU. It seems fairly easy to imagine Thor as one of the MCU’s greatest heroes now, but remember at the time, fans and other film makers were unsure if Thor would work. A god from Norse mythology who lives for thousands of years in the mythical Asgard with his father Odin, the Allfather and his brother Loki, the god of mischief. Yet despite me not ranking Thor as one of the best MCU movies, Branagh certainly did a great job of making Thor’s world feel a part of this MCU.

As the MCU has progressed and grown I think Thor may well have become my favorite Avenger. What about you? Is Thor your favorite or is it Cap or Tony? Did you work out Branagh’s cameo or were you as in the dark as I was? Sound off in the usual place below.
