Ryan Coogler Rewriting Space Jam 2, Film Will Likely Feature Fewer NBA Stars

In spite of the roadblocks in the way, Space Jam 2 sounds like a project Warner Bros. is determined to get out the door. You may have heard recently that the film is having a hard time locking down NBA talent — a feature that was a huge deal in the original 1990s film (as it feature tons of cameos in addition to an entire B-plot involving the likes of Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing), and yes, it sounds like those reports are true, though it’s not for a lack of trying or a terrible script.

Based on a new report from THR, the main problem has to do with sports sponsors with NBA stars like Stephen Curry and James Harden, who are under contracts with Nike competitors Under Armour and Adidas. Seeing as the project is based on a commercial from Nike, I guess not supporting the competitors is kind of a big deal or whatever. But if you think this is a huge problem for the film, it doesn’t seem like it’s a huge one for the studio.

The report states that Space Jam 2 is currently getting a rewrite from Black Panther helmer Ryan Coogler and Searching‘s Sev Ohanian. They’re throwing some solid talent at it here, so don’t give up hope yet. The end result, however, is the emphasis will be less on these cameos and more on the emotional core featuring the main characters, which isn’t a terrible thing.
