Ryan Gosling Is A Great Choice To Bring Ghost Rider Into the MCU

Some casting announcements feel inevitable the moment they’re made.

Ryan Gosling becoming Marvel Studios’ Ghost Rider is one of them.

One of the biggest surprises during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con came when Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige officially announced that the studio has begun development on a new Ghost Rider film. Moments later, Hall H erupted as Gosling walked onto the stage alongside director Shawn Levy to officially unveil the project, which is currently slated for release in 2028.

Jonathan Tropper is writing the screenplay, while Levy takes over directing duties following his blockbuster success with Deadpool & Wolverine.

For many Marvel fans, however, the biggest news wasn’t the creative team, it was Gosling joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s difficult to imagine a better actor for the Spirit of Vengeance.

Over the last decade, Gosling has proven repeatedly that he excels at portraying characters who balance quiet emotion with explosive intensity. Films like DriveBlade Runner 2049The Gray Man, and The Fall Guy have showcased his ability to combine stoic charisma with action, while Barbie reminded audiences that he possesses remarkable comedic timing and undeniable screen presence.

Ghost Rider requires all of those qualities.

Whether Marvel adapts Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, or another version of the supernatural antihero, the character has always walked a fine line between tragic hero, reluctant warrior, and unstoppable force of vengeance. Gosling’s range makes him uniquely equipped to handle each side of that personality.

His casting also signals something larger for Marvel Studios.

The MCU has gradually expanded beyond science fiction into horror and supernatural storytelling through projects like Werewolf by NightMoon Knight, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Ghost Rider represents one of Marvel’s most iconic supernatural characters, and bringing him into the cinematic universe could open the door for an entirely new corner of Marvel lore.

Shawn Levy’s involvement is equally encouraging.

After successfully blending humor, heart, and large-scale spectacle in Deadpool & Wolverine, Levy has demonstrated he understands how to honor beloved Marvel characters while making them accessible to broader audiences. Pairing that directing style with Gosling’s versatility feels like an inspired combination.

The Hall H crowd certainly agreed.

The announcement generated one of the loudest reactions of Marvel’s presentation, a reflection of both the popularity of Ghost Rider and the excitement surrounding Gosling finally joining the MCU.

Marvel has spent years searching for the right moment to introduce Ghost Rider into its interconnected universe. Rather than rushing the character onto the screen, the studio appears to have waited until it found the right creative team and the right leading man.

If first impressions are any indication, they may have nailed both.

Marvel Studios’ Ghost Rider is currently scheduled to hit theaters in 2028.
