SAG-AFTRA Strikes Update: One Week To Save The Fall Season!

The latest SGA-AFTRA Strike update suggest that there's now one week to save the Fall season. Well that's depressing news.

The latest SGA-AFTRA Strike update suggest that there’s now one week to save the Fall season. According to trades, the Studios are setting aside this week to try and resolve the strike action. However, if they cannot get a resolution in this next week, then they will give up until January at the earliest.

As reported by TheWrap.

‘Hollywood studios are giving one more week to negotiations with SAG-AFTRA before they are ready to pack it in for the rest of the year, TheWrap has learned.’

‘According to an individual with knowledge of their thinking, the studios believe that if they can’t reach a deal in the next week with the Screen Actors Guild, which has been on strike since July 14, then no new production will be able to start before 2024.’

I do recall reading some claims that the studios were prepared to go to the holiday season if necessary to put the pinch on actors. That was back when the strikes first began.

I certainly won’t get into the technical details of the offers and issues. Feel free to check TheWrap‘s article for the detailed numbers. However, explains why Thanksgiving will be a key, pivotal date to pass.

‘Once the calendar hits Thanksgiving, it is unlikely any project would begin production, pushing off everything to the new year, this individual said, and killing the studios’ incentive to push for a deal.’

On the other hand, in Deadline‘s report their sources seem more confident a deal can be struck in this latest negotiation.

‘SAG-AFTRA’s chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said it on the picket lines earlier Thursday, and now it seems that “cautious optimism,” as an insider also characterized it today, has become the takeaway term for the state of talks between the actors guild and the studios.’

‘In that vein, SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP have agreed to meet again Friday, after negotiations today that ended after almost five hours.’

However to be clear, Deadline also reports from sources that no deal was struck yet.

Cautious optimism I will take for now. However, I’m worried that the other part is also true. In other words, if the deal cannot be struck in the next week, it’s gonna be a re-run Christmas. There will be nothing new (with actors required) hitting till Spring 24. So let’s all pray to an effigy of Jeff Bezos and Bob Iger that there is a breakthrough soon.
