Back in the ‘90s, Samuel L. Jackson had just become a big name in the film industry. He starred in successful projects like Pulp Fiction, Die Hard With A Vengeance, A Time To Kill, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Jackie Brown, and The Negotiator. After becoming a Jedi in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Jackson was ready to take on an iconic role made famous by Richard Rountree in ‘70s cinema: Detective John Shaft.
With filmmaker John Singleton (Boyz n The Hood, Poetic Justice, Higher Learning) as writer/director and a supporting cast that included Roundtree, Vanessa Williams, Jeffrey Wright, Toni Collette, Busta Rhymes and Christian Bale as the rich bad guy, Shaft stormed into theaters in the summer of 2000. The film was a moderate success, raking in over $107 million worldwide on a budget of $46 million. Now, over 18 years later, Jackson is once again donning the long coat and badge as the “bad motha-shut-yo-mouth”… Sorry. Couldn’t help it.

This time around, both John Shaft I (Roundtree) and John Shaft II (Jackson) help the latter’s estranged son, John Shaft III (Jessie T. Usher) uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death. Joining these three in the cast are Regina Hall, Luna Lauren Velez, Alexandra Shipp, Avan Jogia, Method Man and Matt Lauria. The film is written by Kenya Barris (Black-ish, Girls Trip) and Alex Barnow (The Goldbergs) and directed by Tim Story (Barbershop, Think Like A Man).
Shaft is expected to be released nationwide on June 14th, 2019.
