Sarah Rector is probably one of the real-life historical stories you’ve never heard of. The young child, at the age of 11, inherited an oil field and fought hard to keep that wealth from deceivers.
Actor Mel Rodriguez stars in Sarah’s Oil as an oil rigger and prospector who befriends the young girl with actor Zachary Levi to extract the riches in that inherited land.
The film also stars Naya Desir-Jjohnson, Sonequa Martin-Green, Garret Dillahunt, Kenric Green, and Bridget Regan.
Cyrus Nowrasteh directed the movie from a story inspired by the book “Searching for Sarah Rector” by Tonya Bolden.
Here is the synopsis:
Sarah’s Oil is the remarkable true story of Sarah Rector, an African American girl born in Oklahoma Indian Territory in the early 1900s, who believes there is oil beneath the barren land she’s allotted and whose faith is proven right. As greedy oil sharks close in, Sarah turns to her family, friends, and some Texas wildcatters to maintain control of her oil-rich land, eventually becoming among the nation’s first female African American millionaires—at eleven years old.
