Scrapped Boba Fett Movie Did Not Influence The Mandalorian

Josh Trank’s scrapped Boba Fett Movie was NOT an inspiration for The Mandalorian. Read on for more details.

Josh Trank was supposed to make a Boba Fett movie before the project was canceled, likely because of his awful Fantastic Four movie. I admit, I assumed a lot of the main plot of The Mandalorian had been repurposed from that Boba Fett movie. However, it turns out I and everyone else who thought so were wrong.

Deadline recently caught up with The Mandalorian executive producer Dave Filoni. Filoni explained that whilst the Boba Fett character was an inspiration for The Mandalorian, the scrapped Boba Fett movie was not.

“There wasn’t really any crossover with any previous development. The Mandalorian idea really starts with Jon Favreau coming forward saying he’d like to develop a concept and talking with Kathleen Kennedy about it.”

“She knew I had done a lot of work with Mandalorian people and culture on Clone Wars with George (Lucas) over the years. [Kennedy] always knew that I knew Jon. She called me in when Jon pitched this idea, and he really loved the imagery of a lone gunman and Western. When we were kids, Boba Fett was a ‘Man With No Name.’ Even his publicity stills were evocative of the [Sergio Leone] Dollar trilogy. Some of his mystique had been taken away. Jon’s idea was to reimagine that character as a straight-on bounty hunter and take that imagery of the lone gunfighter. The revelation was this idea of this child in a lone wolf cub sensibility.”

I can totally see where both Favreau and Filoni were coming from with the Boba Fett vibe. It was Boba Fett’s mysterious nature that made him popular, to begin with. However, that Fett’s popularity definitely dropped amongst the fan base after Attack of the Clones. However, now we have a new take on a mysterious Mandalorian who never takes his helmet off. It’s not Boba Fett, and yet it leans so far into that spaghetti western vibe again.

We have no idea what Trank’s Boba Fett movie was about. Therefore, we can’t comment on whether that content should ever be picked up again. However, we do have many a rumor that Boba Fett is appearing in Season 2 of The Mandalorian. Also, LRM‘s own source at Lucasfilm has told us that a Boba Fett Disney+ show is also being developed. For what happens when El Mando meets Boba Fett, we shall just have to wait for The Mandalorian Season 2.

What do you think of this news? Turns out The Mandalorian did not take any ideas from the scrapped Boba Fett movie? Leave your thoughts below.
