Hollywood certainly loves rags to riches stories, and the story of perhaps the biggest one to date has yet to be told on the big screen. But that soon may change.

One film that made this year’s Black List is a film entitled When Lightning Strikes, from screenwriter Anna J. Klassen. The film chronicles the true story behind Harry Potter, the story that launched a young Joanne Rowling from near-poverty levels in London to one of the richest people in the world.
Here is the synopsis of the film:
“The true story of 25-year-old Joanne Rowling as she weathers first loves, unexpected pregnancies, lost jobs, and depression on her journey to create Harry Potter.”
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Klassen, who has written outlets like Bustle, The Daily Beast, and Buzzfeed, gave her own take on the screenplay is about.
“This script is a story of one woman overcoming unthinkable odds – poverty, domestic abuse, depression – to create something born, miraculously, out of love. It’s a story of redemption and inspiration. It’s a story we desperately need in 2017.”
For those who don’t know what The Black List is, it’s a respected annual survey that makes up the most liked screenplays that have not been produced. In many cases, these scripts get picked up by studios and either produced right away or developed, and then produced. Of course, as with anything in Hollywood, there are plenty of cases where they’re picked up and not produced, but given the source material here, it seems that’s rather unlikely.
Klassen took to Twitter to share her excitement and thanks.
“The person I must thank most of all, of course, is J.K. Rowling,” Klassen wrote on Twitter. “The subject of my Black List script & a woman I admire beyond words. Her story is her own – & I have tried to tell it with love, care, & respect.”
