Sean Gunn Is Still Confident That Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Will Get Made – But Who Will Make It?

Probably the biggest drama to hit the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception was the firing of James Gunn before he could complete his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. The script has been written by Gunn and from what everyone is saying that’s the script they will film, but when and if they ever film it, seems another question?

Well, according to Gunn’s brother Sean who plays Kraglin in the Guardians movies, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will definitely get made, even if it takes a little longer than first expected. Sean was recently asked about the current status of Guardians 3 at a recent red carpet event by Associated Press and whilst he was careful to be both supportive to his brother and understanding of the tricky situation, he feels confident Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen.

Gunn said that “outrage overwhelmed common sense” in reference to the difficult time recently following the dismissal of his brother. But he also said that things are looking great for James now that he will be writing and directing Suicide Squad 2 for DC. Interesting that he used the title Suicide Squad 2, because according to sources at THR from a report we shared earlier (check it below), the movie will be called The Suicide Squad and act as almost a complete reboot of the franchise under Gunn’s stewardship.

Sean also went on to say that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will definitely get made eventually “Even if it takes a couple years longer than expected“. Now, the problems with that may well be Disney managing to find a director that’s willing to risk a hell of a lot by stepping into a trilogy at the final part, with a script written by the director who made the first 2, and was then sacked, despite both movies being financially and critically successful.

It’s really a no-win scenario for any potential directors, if they make a great movie, people will say it was the great script of James Gunn, if they make a bad movie, people will blame them and say that Gunn would have made a better movie. If I was an established director I think I’d seriously have to consider knocking that back. Perhaps they could get someone up and coming that needs a break, but that’s a risky option in of itself.

Here’s another wild theory! What if Sean and others are in the know that eventually Disney are going to bring back James Gunn to finish this movie? The on-hold status for however many years could allow for the backlash stream to run still again after it had worked its way into a torrent. Disney has already said this won’t happen and that Gunn remains sacked, but who knows what decisions could be made in 2-3 years’ time?

We know many directors and even Guardians actors remain in support of Gunn and likely none of those directors would accept the offer of this gig even if it were made. So I just wonder if, at the end of all this, there is some sort of path of redemption for Gunn that allows him to finish off the trilogy he started. Until Marvel announces a release date for the movie, if they ever do, then we just won’t know what its fate will be. All we can say is, that Sean Gunn seems pretty relaxed and confident it will happen.
