The rebooted Tomb Raider game series brought things back to their most basic elements. Rather than portraying the character as a bona fide badass who can accomplish mean feats without breaking a sweat, they made her more of a sympathetic novice. She had yet to even kill anyone and was learning the basic rules of survival.

However, by the end of that game, she had killed countless men in her struggle for survival. That body count went up and up and up in Rise of the Tomb Raider, and in the upcoming Shadow of the Tomb Raider, it looks like this could be her bloodiest affair yet.

But what kind of toll will this have on her humanity? The new trailer pretty much portrays her as a heartless killer at this point, taking out a whole platoon of soldiers without giving it a second thought. Of course, we don’t really know the context of these kills, but given that it’s mostly from the perspective of the soldiers, it feels less like a fight for survival and more like an opportunistic kill.

Then, as she saves a person meant to be sacrificed, she is faced with the reality that she herself likely looks like a crazed killer — even to the man about to be killed. Where will this new story take her? I guess you’ll have to play to find out!
