Shazam! Director On The Pros And Cons Of Big Superhero Films Vs. Smaller Films

Have you heard? Big-budget superhero blockbusters all the rage these days. Yeah, I know. Shocking. And in recent years, studios have stopped reaching over to seasoned mid-budget directors to taking their larger properties and have instead started plucking smaller directors out of obscurity to bring these characters to life.

One such person is David F. Sandberg. Okay, well the man wasn’t exactly plucked from “obscurity,” per sé, but this is someone who’s had most of his experience from lower-budget horror films like Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation. They’re not quite indie in nature, but a huge step back from Shazam!, which is likely around a $150 million spectacle-fest. Speaking with Coming Soon while on the set, the helmer discussed the main differences working on something like Shazam! from working on his usual, smaller fare.

“It’s quite a marathon. It’s a very different way of working, just because you have to do all this pre-vis, and plan everything out months in advance. And then when you’re shooting it … It’s not always as fun as shooting a smaller movie, because you have this little piece, and this little piece, because this piece is second unit, this is on blue screen, this is CGI. It’s a lot of things to keep track of. So the shooting is not always fun, but the result is so much more awesome when you have these kinds of resources.”

His thoughts make a lot of sense. With smaller movies, there’s a lot less in terms of logistics to worry about, and more often than not, you’re dealing with deep and emotionally-driven scenes between actors. However, with these larger films, a good chunk of time can be spent prepping for some big explosion — which can take forever and amount to no real “content” to speak of.

But, of course, all this stuff is in service of the story at-large and underlying emotion, so if Sandberg is doing his job, the end result is something potentially more gratifying. At least that’s the hope.

What do you think of Sandberg’s comments? Does he have you any more excited to see Shazam!? Let us know your thoughts down below!
