Billy Batson and his godly alter-ego remain on top as Shazam! once again claims the number one spot at the box office over the weekend. The Warner Bros. / DC Comics superhero flick took in another $25 million, bringing its domestic total to $94 million. Globally, the film has raked in about $258 million. On a budget of $100 million (a smaller number than the typical superhero movie today) and a 90% critic / 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, this is a definite success story for the DC franchise.
As WB/DC celebrates its recent victory, the reboot to Hellboy didn’t fare as well. Based on the Mike Mignola graphic novel, projections had the film making over $16 million domestically. However, Hellboy came in third over the weekend, just barely crossing $12 million. While David Harbour (Stranger Things) has received some praise for his performance, the film has been bombarded with negative reviews stating the film is all action but no story. The extremely low Rotten Tomatoes Score didn’t help the film much either.

This week, The Curse Of La Llorona, Breakthrough, and Disneynature: Penguins will be opening nationwide. Either one of these films could threaten the reign of Shazam! and push Hellboy down the list. And of course, there’s this small, low-key film opening April 26th that may have a slight impact on the box office… I believe it’s called Avengers: Endgame.
