Shōgun Miniseries On The Way Based On Epic James Clavell Novel

There was once a time in the ’80s and early-’90s when miniseries were in, and they were able to tell long-form stories on the small screen. Luckily, while it’s taken a while, it looks like that trend is once again en vogue, with recent shows like Sharp Objects really taking advantage of the unique medium to tell longer stories. Now, we’re taking advantage of it to tell older stories we’ve already told — but with modern filmmaking tech.

The latest example of this is Shōgun, which is set to become a limited series at FX, Deadline reports. According to the outlet, the adaptation of the James Clavell novel will run 10 episodes, and will be their largest international scale production to date.

The thousand-page tome was originally turned into a miniseries back in 1980, and it starred Richard Chamberlain, Yoko Shimada, and perhaps most notably, Toshiro Mifune, a Japanese actor who is best known for collaborating with Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, director of such films as Yojimbo and Seven Samurai (both films Mifune starred in).

Here is a statement from John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions.

“The story of Shōgun has captivated audiences since James Clavell first released his epic novel more than 40 years ago. The themes of an outsider encountering a new culture are as relevant today as then. We are honored to bring the series to today’s viewers through our partnership with executive producers Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Michael De Luca, Clavell’s daughter Michaela, and Eugene Kelly. We are equally thrilled that Ronan Bennett and Rachel Bennette are writing the new adaption, and that Tim Van Patten will bring his vision and expertise to directing this saga of adventure, power and loyalty that the world has come to know as Shōgun.”

While I’ve read the novel, I haven’t had a chance to check out the original series for myself. I’m eager to check it out ahead of this FX production to see just how the filmmakers and storytellers in the medium have grown over the past 38 years.
