Shortcomings Trailer Reveals Adorable Asian Comedy Making Randall Park Directorial Debut

Shortcomings became an indie darling after its showcase at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival.

Also, the indie romantic comedy marks the directorial debut of funnyman Randall Park.

The film stars Justin H. Min (Beef, After Yang), Sherry Cola (Good Trouble, Claws), Ally Maki (Wrecked, 10 Things I Hate About You), and Debby Ryan (Insatiable, Jessie). Randall Park directed the film from the adapted screenplay by Adrian Tomine, based on his acclaimed graphic novel.

Here is the official synopsis of Shortcomings:

Ben, a struggling filmmaker, lives in Berkeley, California, with his girlfriend, Miko, who works for a local Asian American film festival. When he’s not managing an arthouse movie theater as his day job, Ben spends his time obsessing over unavailable blonde women, watching Criterion Collection DVDs, and eating in diners with his best friend Alice, a queer grad student with a serial dating habit. When Miko moves to New York for an internship, Ben is left to his own devices, and begins to explore what he things he might want.

Randall Park makes a decent directorial debut in this light-hearted Asian rom-com. It plays with certain Asian misconceptions that prove to be hilarious lessons. Ultimately, there is a strong desire for more of these types of films starring Asians.

Shortcomings is in theaters on August 4, 2023.
