Much to everyone’s horror, Sony continues to make headway with their “Spider-Man Universe,” that seemingly won’t involve Spider-Man at all, instead focusing on characters such as Venom, Silver Sable, and Black Cat, while Marvel Studios shares custody of good ole’ web-head within the completely separate Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Venom film came together fast, with Sony already securing Tom Hardy to play Eddie Brock/Venom, Ruben Fleischer to direct, and a release date of October 5, 2018. Now we’re beginning to receive important details, at an alarming rate, concerning another “Spider-Man spinoff,” focusing on Silver Sable and Black Cat. It was already announced that Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) is penning the most recent draft, following Lisa Joy’s (HBO’s Westworld) work on the script, but now we have a title, director, and possible synopsis for the film.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Gina Prince-Bythewood will be directing the film now titled Silver & Black. Prince-Bythewood is most well known for her critically acclaimed debut Love and Basketball, as well as Secret Life of Bees and Beyond the Lights. Helming Silver & Black for Sony makes Prince-Bythewood the first black woman to direct a superhero movie.

Splash Report claims to have a synopsis for the film, which includes details on what other Spider-Man characters are set to appear, such as Norman Osborn, Kraven the Hunter, and Spider-Woman. Take the following with a major grain of salt, because it is not official and could be pure baloney, for all we know. I still thought it was worth sharing, just in case. From Splash Report:
“Here are some details about the story: Seven years after Mendel Stromm (a.k.a. Robot Master) and his two henchmen (The Scorpion and The Tarantula) killed her father, Silver Sable is hired by the government to find Felicia Hardy. The Black Cat, a master hacker and thief, has apparently stolen valuable secret information. She’s hiding in the lawless and dangerous triple frontier area between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil.
Once there, Sable ask her old contact Dmitri Smerdyakov (a.k.a. The Chameleon) to locate her. But it seems, the government are not the only ones looking for the Black Cat. It seems Felicia had made a deal Stromm to save her father from a Russian prison and she’s been genetically enhanced. Now, the mad scientist wants his prized experiment back because his financier (cough Norman Osborn cough) wants a return on his investment.
There’s no appearance, or mention of Peter Parker or Spider-Man.
Also in the story: Dominic Fortune, Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman), Roxxon Oil, Sergei Kravinoff (Kraven the Hunter), Lonnie Lincoln (Tombstone) and Charles Standish.”
It’s great to have another woman directing a female led superhero film, following Patty Jenkins’ work on Wonder Woman, and Anna Boden who is set to co-direct Captain Marvel. Gina Prince-Bythewood even has superhero experience, having directed the pilot for Freeform and Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger.
On the other hand, I hope the synopsis and cast of characters are not accurate. You can rule out any character that shows up in Silver & Black from ever appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It would be a shame if characters like Kraven the Hunter and Norman Osborn are unavailable for Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 and beyond.
What do you think about all of this? Do you dig the title, Silver & Black? Is this rumored plot something you’d be interested in, or is the absence of Spider-Man a deal breaker? Let us know in the comment section below!
