According to the latest Barside Buzz Season 4 of The Mandalorian could be 6 episodes long with the finale being The Mandalorian and Grogu movie. This is not 100% and nothing of this sort was reported in the official press release, or any of the trade reports. The latest information comes from MSW, who to be fair was also first to claim the movie idea was a possibility. MSW say even they are not 100% but one source told them the plan was to shorten Season 4 and have the finale be the movie. When they asked another source, they simply said, this could be the case rather than was.
MSW themselves don’t think it will happen like that, and I have to say neither do I. The idea of forcing fans to watch six episodes then go to theatres to catch the end has been imagined before. Remember Game of Thrones once played with this idea. However there are good reasons why it’s not usual practice. Normally you want a movie to be able to stand alone. Ideally a fan who has heard of Mando but never watched it should be able to catch The Mandalorian and Grogu and get a complete experience in that theatre.
That’s why I still believe the overall plot of what was Season 4 will become the movie. However until we hear something official who knows? Remember when the movie idea was first reported, none of those reporting it figured it would actually happen. Then, it did.
THR has a slightly different take and seems to think the movie is a Season 4 replacement.

‘Pre-strikes, Lucasfilm was intent on making season four of Mandalorian. The scripts had all been written. During the Great Hollywood Break however, things got re-evaluated, with plans shifting to the movie as the priority.’
‘What happens to season four now is unclear. It’s definitely not a given. If the movie is a success, it could lead to next phase of Mando storytelling becoming movie sequels. Box office and fan reaction would determine that.’
‘Sources say that Filoni’s own movie is still on trac at this point, although it is due to come after season two of Ahsoka, whenever that will be.’
This is a story that I think we will get more updates on as the weeks go by. We will know eventually if a series is being filmed or just a movie. Last we heard production on Season 4 was set for February. However, that was prior to the movie decision. Therefore we will need to wait and see when production actually begins. By then though, we will know more.
So, Season 4 of The Mandalorian could be 6 episodes long with the finale being The Mandalorian and Grogu movie. What do you think of this Barside Buzz? Would this be a worse idea that turning Season 4 into a movie or a better idea? I have my opinions, what are yours? Thoughts below as always.
