Sorry this review of Skeleton Crew Episode 5 is a little late, it did drop on Christmas Day, but here we are. I literally just watched the episode before writing this, so it is fresh in my mind. As always I’ll be keeping SPOILER FREE in this review, so I won'[t get into the weeds.
The good thing about Episode 5 is that the set up, and fun factor are back to the levels they were in Episode 3. I wasn’t a huge fan of Episode 4, and by the way, neither was my daughter who is watching this with me as her first Star Wars experience. We both felt Episode 5 a return to form in the drama department and the humor.
Episode 5 screams of Goonies vibes even more than what has come before. There is a quest to to get to a crypt and some treasure to find. The way however, is littered with booby traps. Oh and some pirates are in hot pursuit. Without me giving any plot details away I’m sure you have half a mind where this one goes.
Hardly breaking any new ground, but this episode works within the context of the Star Wars Universe more than last week. The location and set up, all seem more at home in Star Wars than last week’s generic sci-fi plot did. The end of the episode also leaves on a bit of a cliff-hanger, which hasn’t really happened since Episode 1-2.

I actually kinda wish, since it was Christmas Day, they could have dropped both episodes at once. Clearly we are going to continue Episode 6 from exactly where 5 ended. I guess that’s my only real criticism of Episode 5. It changes the status quo and then just ends abruptly. I really wish sometimes Disney would just let them have one less episode and have one really long one like clearly 5-6 will be.
Though at 46 minutes, Episode 5 is the longest since the opening episode. Yet, weirdly it was this week only where I felt the ending abrupt. If they had dropped 6 this week also, I probably don’t even mention this criticism. All you can ever say is how you feel in the moment.
Overall a very good episode, one of the best yet. Currently, I’d say my second favourite episode of the series. I just wish we didn’t have to wait a week for an emotional conclusion to the episode.
GRADE: A-
Fun, simple, well acted, and well shot, but with a slightly abrupt ending for what is clearly a two-parter story.
