Skrull Actors Frightened Cat Performers In Captain Marvel

Last weekend Marvel Studio’s Captain Marvel took theaters by storm. The film starring Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law and Ben Mendelsohn entertained audiences as we now have the final film before the highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame. But there was another character in the film that some including my daughter would agree that managed to steal some scenes, Goose the cat or… not a cat a Flerken.

Vulture had the opportunity to talk with animal trainer Ursula Brauner from Boone’s Animals for Hollywood, who was in charge of the four cats that all play Goose in the film named Reggie, Archie, Rizzo and Gonzo. Reason why they use many cats is so they could spread out the work on different days. Also the cats have different strengths. Despite being well trained, the cats were initially terrified by the Skrull actors on set.

“That was one of our challenges because [Skrulls] look so different from people,” said Brauner. “Ben Mendelsohn was so amazing getting the cats used to the costume and makeup, though. He showed them how he moved and sounded, and he was just really great getting the cats to like him.”

Actors like Mendelsohn had to be very patient with the cats as they got used to their presence and figure out that they were no different than anyone else on set. Brauner talked about a particular scene on the quad-jet with Reggie, the primary cat used for Goose, Telos and the rest of the onboard.

“Reggie was a little unfurled,” recalled Brauner. “[Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck] took the time to say, ‘Let’s stop what we’re doing and get the cat comfortable.’ We had Reggie sitting on a chair, and Ben was sitting in the chair next to him, and we let Reggie go to him and explore on his own volition, and pretty soon, he realized Ben was just like us, but he just looked different. It’s about taking the time to stop. And it shows onscreen.”

Goose definitely provided some great moments in Captain Marvel. Although very doubtful it would be great to one day see him in another Marvel film. For Brauner she can now say that her cats work well with actors and Skrulls alike. What did you think of Goose in Captain Marvel? Let us know in the comment section below!
