Slasher Flick-Inspired American Horror Story Season 9 Is Called 1984

For the past eight or so years, Ryan Murphy’s love letter to all things horror, American Horror Story, has played with many tropes in the genre. We got typical evil house horror tropes in Murder House, witch stuff in Coven, freak show stuff in Freak Show, and many others. Half of the fun in this show is waiting to see what subgenre will be exploited in the upcoming season, and if you’ve been waiting to see what to expect in Season 9…wait no longer.

Showrunner and creator Ryan Murphy recently took to Instagram to show off footage from the new season (though given the series’ tendency not to actually show legit footage from the show proper, I guess it and just be an exclusive clip for social media). The clip shows a girl running through the runs from a masked assailant — already making clear the slasher theme of the season. The girl predictably heads to a cabin and shuts the door behind her, only for the slasher’s knife to cut through the door.

So this year’s season is called American Horror Story: 1984. Clearly, Murphy has taken a page out of Wonder Woman‘s book and opted to give the season the same year as a subtitle. Given how much the ’80s are associated with the slasher genre, it’s pretty fitting, and I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of story they plan on utilizing. What twists and turns will they bring to the tried-and-true narrative? We’ll have to wait and see!
