Slender Man Film Being Shopped Around After Disagreements Between Producers & Sony

Looks like the low-budget horror film Slender Man is in a bit of trouble. According to Variety producers for the film and Sony Pictures have had major disagreements about the release strategy for the film. The film is supposed to be released this August that according to insiders Sony sees as a low budget Blumhouse style release. While the production team of the film want a bigger marketing push so they can get it on more screens. Of course this would cost the Sony more money then they are willing to spend.

This disagreement has lead the producers to trigger a clause in their contract that would allow them to solicit higher offers. This is a rare occurrence for a film to be shopped around so late into production, especially with the fact that Sony has already put out a trailer for the film, (which you can check out above) as well as images and posters. If someone were to buy the film, they would have to pay Sony for any expenses they had. Variety’s sources say that they have already shown the film to several studios including Netflix and Amazon, but they are all skeptical about it’s commercial potential.

One other factor that has Sony worried is the backlash the film could receive via social media since the film is based on a character created back in 2009 that allegedly inspired two twelve year old girls to stab one of their friends nineteen times. The result of that tragedy is that the two girls ended up institutionalized and the victim survived. The father of the two girls has public ally criticized the film as “extremely distasteful”. There are some theaters in Wisconsin near where the stabbing took place that have said they will not show the film. If that weren’t enough there is even an online petition demanding that the studio pull the film from being released which has over 19,000 signatures.

These factors alone are definitely enough to worry Sony and anyone else interested in releasing the film. If the producers can’t find another buyer they may just move forward with their current August release date. By the looks of the trailer, I think the producers may want to back off and just stick with Sony’s strategy as it looks like they may be over confident in it’s potential.

Who do you think is right the producers or Sony? Let us know in the comment section below!

Sony Pictures’ Slender Man is currently scheduled to be released August 24, 2018.
