Tomorrow is the release of the Disney+ original film, Sneakerella. As you might have already guessed, it takes a modern, contemporary take on the classic fairy tale, Cinderella. Yes, this tale has been recycled many times as different filmmakers have different visions of what it should look like. Or maybe they want to do a version of a close and dear story from their childhood. Whatever the case, here is another retelling of the tale that takes place in the street-sneaker subculture of New York City.

Our lead in Sneakerella is El, played by Chosen Jacobs. His mother has passed away and has left him, his step-father, and two stepbrothers a shoe shop in Queens, New York. El and his mother shared a passion for all things sneakers. Due to this, he is now an aspiring sneaker designer. He gets his inspiration for his designs from the loving community that surrounds him. But he hides his gifts from his stepfather, who is under a lot of pressure to try and make the store he was left with work. Despite having two other stepbrothers, El always is stuck working in the shop as they go off and venture into their own projects. Everything changes, when El meets Kira King, played by Lexi Underwood.

With the release of Sneakerella tomorrow, LRM Online’s Emmanuel Gomez spoke with Chosen Jacobs about his role as El. In our conversation, we talk about his feelings on the different modern take on the story. He shares with us how important it was also to show the give and take relationship in a community. Were you help each other out in times of need leading to everyone being successful. Last but certainly not least he tells us about his experience in working with Lexi Underwood. Here is the synopsis for Disney+’s Sneakerella

“Sneakerella” is set in the vibrant street-sneaker subculture of New York City. It introduces El (Jacobs), an aspiring sneaker designer from Queens. He works as a stock boy in the shoe store that once belonged to his late mother. El hides his artistic talent from his overburdened stepfather and two mean-spirited stepbrothers who constantly stomp on any opportunity that comes his way.

When El meets Kira King (Underwood), the fiercely independent daughter of legendary basketball star and sneaker tycoon Darius King (Salley), sparks fly as the two bond over their mutual affinity for sneakers. With a little nudge from his best friend and a sprinkle of Fairy Godfather magic, El finds the courage to use his talent to pursue his dream of becoming a ‘legit’ sneaker designer in the industry.

The Disney+ original movie Sneakerella premieres on Friday, May 13th only on Disney+.
